Reducing gearboxes solve the above problem by converting high-speed, low-torque energy into the output with a low speed and high torque; thus, greater control and accuracy are achieved, besides handling big loads.

Types of Reduction Gearboxes


There are several types of reduction gearboxes with distinct design and purpose. The types that are highly used are:-


  • Helical Gearboxes: They are robust and efficient. Helical gears have their teeth at an angle, making them work with less friction and wear out less with time. Their use is mostly in applications requiring noise reduction and efficiency, such as conveyors and elevators.


  • Worm Gearboxes: The worm gear system consists of a screw-shaped gear, the worm, that meshes with a helical gear. In this kind of setup, worm gearboxes can manage an extraordinary amount of gear reduction in a very small package. Further, they come with self-locking ability; that is, they cannot be driven backward, which is useful in hoisting or conveyor-type applications where safety is paramount.


  • Planetary Gearboxes: Planetary gearboxes are characterized by a central sun gear, which the planet gears are positioned around. They offer exceptionally high torque output in an extremely compact design. They are mostly applied in heavy-duty equipment where accuracy with very high torque is needed, such as robotics and industrial equipment.


  • Bevel Gearboxes: These gearboxes are used when the rotation direction of a shaft has to be changed. In these systems, the power transmission is shifted using angled bevel gears. They often tend to be found in applications of both the marine devices and power tools that require right-angle drives.
